8 Tips to Declutter Your Home Using the KonMari Method

If you’re like most people, your home is probably cluttered with things you don’t need or use. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this problem – the KonMari method of tidying up. Created by Marie Kondo, the KonMari method is a simple yet effective way to declutter your home and improve your life.

Here are eight tips for tidying up using the KonMari method:

1. Start with clothes

According to Kondo, clothes are the easiest category to start with when tidying up because they don’t have as much emotional value as other items in our homes. Begin by gathering all of your clothes in one place and sorting them into piles based on whether they spark joy or not. Keep only the items that bring you joy, and donate or discard the rest.

2. Move on to books

Next, tackle your book collection using the same process as above. Kondo advises that we should only keep books that we love and plan on reading again in the future.

3. Declutter papers

Papers can be overwhelming due to their sheer volume but they must be addressed since it can affect productivity if it’s not organised properly according to Marie Kondo’s ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’. Gather all papers from different areas in your house together including bills, receipts etc., sort them out depending on which ones are important enough for storage (e.g., legal documents) versus those that can be discarded (e.g., old magazines).

4. Discard miscellaneous items

After dealing with big categories such as clothes and books, move onto miscellaneous items such as kitchenware or toys so you won’t get too overwhelmed while sorting through these smaller collections.

5. Organise Komono (miscellaneous)

This category may take some time since it includes everything else aside from what was mentioned earlier: decoratives pieces in living room; cleaning supplies under sink; toiletries in bathroom; etc. Sort through each item carefully and decide whether you really need it or not.

6. Sentimentals

Sentimental items are the most challenging category to deal with since these are usually the things that hold emotional value such as old photos, letters, and gifts from loved ones. Kondo recommends holding each item one by one and asking yourself if it sparks joy for you. If it does, keep it but if not, thank it for its service before discarding.

7. Find a place for everything

Once you’ve finished decluttering each category of items in your home, assign a specific spot where they should be stored so they don’t end up scattered around your house again.

8. Maintain your tidy space

The final step is to maintain a clean and organised environment by making tidying up part of your daily routine instead of waiting until clutter accumulates again – remember: “A little everyday goes a long way”.

In conclusion, tidying up using the KonMari method can have a significant impact on our lives as we free ourselves from unnecessary clutter and improve our mental health state which leads to more productivity and focus in life. By following these eight tips listed above, anyone can achieve an organised home that sparks joy!
