The Importance of Shape and Form in Minimalism: An Interview with a Minimalist Blogger and Interior Designer

Interview with a Minimalist: The Importance of Shape and Form

Minimalism is all about stripping away the unnecessary to focus on what truly matters. But how do we determine what is essential? One way is by considering the shape and form of our possessions.

To explore this topic further, I spoke with Rachel Smith, a minimalist blogger and interior designer who has made shape and form a central part of her philosophy.

Q: Rachel, thank you for speaking with me today. Can you tell us why shape and form are important in minimalism?

A: Of course! Shape and form play an essential role in determining whether something adds value to our lives or not. When we have items that are pleasing to look at or hold, it can enhance our overall experience of them. Conversely, objects that are awkwardly shaped or difficult to use can be a hindrance rather than a help.

Q: So how do you go about evaluating the shape and form of your possessions?

A: It’s helpful to think about both the visual appeal as well as the practicality. For example, if you have a mug that looks beautiful but is impossible to drink from without spilling everywhere, it’s probably not serving its purpose very well!

I also like to consider whether an object feels good in my hand or against my skin. Texture is another important aspect of form that can make a big difference in our enjoyment of something.

Q: That makes sense. And how does this translate into your work as an interior designer?

A: As a designer, I’m always thinking about how different shapes and forms interact with each other within a space. Too many conflicting shapes can create visual chaos while using repeating shapes can create harmony.

It’s also important for furniture pieces to be appropriately sized for their intended use – too large or small can throw off the balance of a room.

Q: Do you have any tips for someone just starting out on their minimalism journey who may not have a designer’s eye?

A: Absolutely! I would encourage anyone starting out to take some time to really look at their possessions. Ask yourself why you have each item and how it makes you feel.

Consider whether there are any items that could be replaced with something more functional or attractive. And remember that minimalism isn’t about depriving ourselves – it’s about choosing intentionally what we allow into our lives.

Q: That’s a great perspective. Can you give an example of how shape and form have impacted your own life as a minimalist?

A: Sure! One area where this has been particularly important for me is in my wardrobe. By focusing on pieces with clean lines and flattering shapes, I’ve been able to create a cohesive collection that works well together.

I’ve also learned to appreciate the beauty of negative space, which allows each piece to shine on its own rather than competing for attention.

Q: It sounds like shape and form can be applied in many different areas of life!

A: Absolutely! Whether we’re talking about home decor, fashion, or even technology, considering the shape and form of our possessions can help us make intentional choices that enhance our overall experience of them.

Q: Any final thoughts on this topic?

A: Just that I think shape and form are often overlooked when people talk about minimalism, but they really do play a crucial role in helping us determine what adds value to our lives. By being mindful of these elements, we can create spaces filled with things we love rather than just things we own.

Thank you so much for speaking with me today Rachel!
