10 Tips and Tricks to Declutter Your Home and Boost Your Mental Health

As our lives become more cluttered and busy, it’s easy to let our physical spaces become cluttered as well. However, decluttering can have a huge impact on both our mental health and the functionality of our homes. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get started:

1. Start small: Decluttering can be overwhelming, so start with a small area like a drawer or shelf before moving onto larger areas.

2. Create a plan: Make a list of all the areas in your home that need decluttering and prioritize them by importance.

3. Sort items into categories: As you go through each area, sort items into categories such as keep, donate/sell, recycle or trash.

4. Be ruthless: When deciding what to keep or get rid of, ask yourself if the item is really necessary or if it brings you joy. If not, consider letting it go.

5. Use storage solutions: Once you’ve decided what to keep, use storage solutions such as baskets or bins to organize them in an easily accessible way.

6. One in one out rule: To prevent future clutter from accumulating quickly adopt the “one in one out” rule – for every new item brought into your home another must be donated/sold/given away.

7. Go digital where possible: In today’s digital age there is no need for paper copies of bills/receipts/manuals etc., scan these documents and store them digitally instead of adding unnecessary paper piles around your home.

8.Clear surfaces regularly – Clear off surfaces every day (kitchen counters/dressers) this helps maintain orderliness throughout  and reduces visual messes which cause stress

9.Learn how to say “No” – Learn how to say no when invited places/events that will increase the amount of stuff entering your life unnecessarily

10.Practice self-reflection-The greatest reason people tend to hold on things they don’t need is because of the emotions tied to them. Take some time for self-reflection to understand your emotional attachments and how they impact you.

Decluttering can be a daunting task, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By following these tips and tricks, you’ll not only create a more functional living space but also reduce stress, increase productivity, and possibly even save money by not buying things you don’t truly need. Happy decluttering!
