The Stats Behind the KonMari Method: Why Decluttering Sparks Joy and Reduces Stress

KonMari Method: The Statistics Behind Decluttering and Minimalism

Minimalism and decluttering have been gaining popularity in recent years, with more people opting for a simpler lifestyle. Among the various approaches to minimalism, one that has stood out is the KonMari method.

Developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, the KonMari method is based on the principle of keeping only those things that “spark joy.” It involves decluttering by category rather than location and requires individuals to hold each item they own and ask if it brings them happiness before deciding whether or not to keep it.

While some may view this approach as extreme or impractical, there are numerous statistics that suggest otherwise. Here are just a few:

1. Reduced Stress Levels

According to a survey conducted by SpareFoot, an online marketplace for self-storage units, 78% of respondents reported feeling stressed out due to clutter in their homes. In contrast, nearly 40% of those who had tried the KonMari method reported feeling less stressed after decluttering.

Another study published in Personality and Social Psychology Review found that having cluttered surroundings can lead to increased cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and decreased productivity.

2. Increased Happiness

As mentioned earlier, the KonMari method emphasizes keeping items that spark joy. According to a survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of IKEA UK, over half of respondents (51%) said having a tidy home makes them happier.

Furthermore, studies have shown that physical clutter can negatively impact mental well-being. A report from UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives of Families found that women who described their homes as “cluttered” had higher levels of cortisol than women who described their homes as “restful.”

3. Saved Time and Money

Decluttering can save time in several ways; less time spent cleaning up means more free time for other activities or relaxation. Additionally, owning fewer possessions means less time spent searching for lost items.

Moreover, decluttering can also save money. A study by the National Association of Home Builders found that the average size of new homes has increased by 62% since 1973, leading to higher construction and maintenance costs. By reducing the number of possessions one owns, individuals can cut down on expenses related to storage and home organization.

4. Environmental Benefits

Finally, decluttering through the KonMari method can have environmental benefits as well. Owning fewer possessions means consuming less resources in terms of production and transportation. Additionally, donating unwanted items rather than throwing them away reduces waste in landfills.

In conclusion, while some may view the KonMari method as an extreme or impractical approach to minimalism, statistics suggest otherwise. Decluttering through this method has been shown to reduce stress levels, increase happiness, save time and money, and benefit the environment – all compelling reasons to give it a try!
