Interview with a Minimalist: Embracing Simplicity in Cosmetics

Today, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Emma Thompson, a passionate minimalist and advocate for decluttering. Emma has successfully integrated minimalism into various aspects of her life, including her approach to cosmetics. In this interview, she will share her insights on how to embrace simplicity when it comes to beauty products.

Q: Thank you for joining us today, Emma. Can you start by telling us about your journey towards minimalism?

A: Of course! My journey towards minimalism started several years ago when I realized that my possessions were taking over my life. I felt overwhelmed by clutter and constantly stressed trying to manage all of it. So, I decided to simplify my life and adopt a more minimalist lifestyle.

Q: How did this transition affect your approach towards cosmetics?

A: The transition towards minimalism had a profound impact on how I viewed cosmetics and personal care products. Previously, I was easily swayed by marketing messages and would hoard numerous skincare items and makeup products that promised miraculous results. But as I embraced minimalism, I realized that having an excessive collection of beauty products didn’t align with my new values.

Q: What steps did you take to declutter your cosmetic collection?

A: Decluttering my cosmetic collection was both liberating and challenging at the same time. Firstly, I gathered all my beauty products in one place so that I could see the extent of what I owned. Then, using the KonMari method popularized by Marie Kondo, I sorted through each item individually.

I asked myself if each product brought me joy or served a purpose in my daily routine. If not, it was time for them to go – either donated or responsibly disposed of depending on their condition.

Q: How do you decide which products make the cut now?

A: Nowadays, before purchasing any new product, I consider a few key factors. Firstly, I evaluate whether the product aligns with my personal values and ethics. For example, I prioritize cruelty-free and sustainable brands.

Secondly, I assess if the product fills a gap in my existing routine or enhances it in some way. Rather than hoarding multiple similar items like different shades of lipstick or eyeshadows, I opt for versatile products that can be used in various ways.

Q: Can you give us an example of how you simplified your skincare routine?

A: Absolutely! Simplifying my skincare routine was one of the most impactful changes for me. Previously, I had countless steps involving various serums, creams, masks, and treatments. Now, however, I focus on quality over quantity.

I stick to a basic three-step routine – cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen daily. By investing in high-quality products tailored to my skin type and needs, I eliminated unnecessary clutter from my bathroom shelf.

Q: How do you approach makeup now that you’ve embraced minimalism?

A: My approach to makeup has drastically changed since embracing minimalism. Instead of purchasing every new trendy palette or shade that comes out on the market, I have curated a small collection of essential products that work for me.

I focus on multi-purpose items like tinted moisturizers or cream blushes that can be used not only as intended but also creatively as lip colors or eyeshadows. This way, fewer products serve multiple purposes without sacrificing versatility or creativity.

Q: Have there been any unexpected benefits from adopting a minimalist approach to cosmetics?

A: Absolutely! Besides having more physical space and less clutter in my life overall thanks to minimalism’s influence on cosmetics—a more significant benefit has been the positive impact on my mindset.

By focusing on quality rather than quantity when it comes to beauty products—and indeed other areas—I feel less overwhelmed by choices and decision fatigue. It has allowed me to appreciate and enjoy the products I do have without constantly seeking the next best thing.

Q: Any final tips for our readers who want to embrace minimalism in their cosmetic routines?

A: Certainly! My first tip would be to take it slow. Minimalism is a journey, not an overnight transformation. Start by evaluating what you currently have and decluttering any items that no longer serve a purpose or bring joy.

Secondly, consider your values when making future purchases. Opt for brands that align with your ethics and sustainability goals, supporting companies that share your vision.

Lastly, experiment with versatile products to reduce clutter while still enjoying creativity in your routine. Remember, simplicity doesn’t mean sacrificing self-expression!

Q: Thank you so much for sharing these valuable insights with us today, Emma!

A: It was my pleasure. I hope these tips inspire others to find beauty in simplicity and embrace minimalism in their cosmetic routines too!
